Family Allowances

The new Federal Law on family allowances is valid since the 1st of January 2009.

The implementing bodies have unrestricted access to this register, while public access to the online version is restricted. This database allows users to find out if they are entitled to claim a family allowance for a child and from which service. All that is required is the AHV/AVS number and date of birth of the child concerned:

Pursuant to the Federal Law on Family Allowances, the following minimum allowances shall be disbursed per child, per month:

  • a family allowance of at least CHF 200 for children up to the age of 16;
  • an education allowance of at least CHF 250 for 16-25 year-olds who are still in education.

Please note that these provisions apply to all cantons.

 The following are eligible for family allowances: salaried employees, the self-employed (from 1 January 2013), and low-income individuals who are not in gainful employment. Special rules apply to agricultural workers.

A family allowance register in operation since 1 January 2011.
