The purpose of the Invalidity Insurance scheme (IV/AI) is to cover the basic needs of individuals with a protracted health impairment and support their social reintegration. The health-impaired person should, wherever possible, be able to remain in work or successfully (re-)join the workforce.

The aim of rehabilitation measures is to ensure that the health-impaired remain able to work, or regain or increase that capacity.
