International Organisations

On matters that fall within the remit of the FSIO, the International Organisations Unit (IO) represents Switzerland in those international organisations of which it is a member, particularly the UN, the ILO, the OECD, the Council of Europe and ISSA. It defends the interests of Switzerland and its citizens by checking, prior to possible ratification, the compatibility of international law pertaining to social security with prevailing Swiss legislation, by playing an active role in the international standard-setting process, and by reporting periodically to the supervisory bodies of these organisations. The IO Unit also checks the compatibility of Swiss draft social security legislation with the country’s existing international commitments. Finally, the IO Unit monitors international developments and liaises with foreign experts so that Switzerland is able to draw on the experiences of other countries when updating or improving its existing social policy.
